Whitney Houston
Born August 9, 1963
American singer nicknamed "the Voice," known for chart-topping 1980s hits and her starring role in The Bodyguard.
Whitney Houston was an American singer from Newark, New Jersey. Her mother, Cissy Houston, was a singer, and her cousin was Dionne Warwick. She sang in her church choir from age five and signed with Arista Records at 19, working with Clive Davis. Her self-titled debut album in 1985 spent 14 weeks at No. 1, and her second album, Whitney, opened at the top of the chart. Known as "the Voice," she had a long run of number-one singles. Houston made her film debut in The Bodyguard (1992) with Kevin Costner and later starred in Waiting to Exhale and The Preacher's Wife. She won eight Grammy Awards and sold more than 200 million records.

Jean Piaget
Born August 9, 1896
Swiss psychologist who studied how children come to understand the world and described four stages of cognitive development.
Jean Piaget was a Swiss psychologist from Neuchâtel. He first trained in zoology and philosophy, then began studying psychology in Zürich in 1918. Piaget was among the first scientists to study in a systematic way how children gain understanding. He proposed that children pass through four stages of thinking: sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and formal operational, each bringing more advanced reasoning and use of symbols. He called his wider study of how knowledge grows "genetic epistemology." Piaget worked at the University of Geneva from 1929 and in 1955 founded an international center for genetic epistemology there, which he led until 1980. His books include The Language and Thought of the Child and The Origin of Intelligence in Children.

Born August 9, 1899
Australian-born British writer who created the magical nanny Mary Poppins, later made famous by the 1964 Disney film.
P. L. Travers was a writer born Helen Lyndon Goff in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia. She took the pen name Pamela Travers, using her father's first name. Before becoming an author, she worked as a secretary, acted with a touring theater company, and wrote for Australian newspapers. In 1924 she moved to England and settled in London. Her novel Mary Poppins, about a magical nanny, came out in 1934 and was followed by several sequels over the next five decades. Walt Disney turned the story into a 1964 film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke. Travers also wrote about mythology and was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1977.
