Alexander Fleming
Born August 6, 1881
Scottish bacteriologist who discovered penicillin and shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Alexander Fleming was a Scottish scientist born in Lochfield, in East Ayrshire. He studied medicine at St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, where he won a gold medal as a top student in 1908. In 1921 he identified lysozyme, a natural enzyme in body fluids that can destroy certain bacteria. His most famous discovery came in 1928, when he noticed that mold growing on a bacterial culture had killed the nearby bacteria. The substance the mold produced became known as penicillin, the first antibiotic. Fleming shared the 1945 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Howard Florey and Ernst Chain for the discovery of penicillin and its power to treat infections.
