Jesse Owens
Born September 12, 1913
American track and field star who won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
Jesse Owens, born James Cleveland Owens in Danville, Alabama, became one of the most famous athletes of the twentieth century. While running for Ohio State University in 1935, he set three world records in less than an hour at a meet in Michigan, a feat no one has matched. At the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin, held while Adolf Hitler ruled Germany, Owens captured gold in the 100 meters, the 200 meters, the long jump, and the 4x100-meter relay, which set a world record. After his running days, he worked in business, ran a public relations and marketing firm, served on Illinois athletic and youth commissions, and wrote several books about his life and beliefs.

Barry White
Born September 12, 1944
American soul singer, songwriter, and producer famous for his deep bass voice and romantic hits.
Barry White was an American singer, songwriter, and producer born in Galveston, Texas. At first he preferred working behind the scenes, but in 1973 20th Century Records persuaded him to release his own recordings, and he quickly became a star. Between 1973 and 1977 he scored hit after hit, including the romantic songs "Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe" and "Your Sweetness Is My Weakness." His trademark was a low, rumbling voice that both spoke and sang over rich orchestra arrangements, sometimes credited to the Love Unlimited Orchestra. Nicknamed "The Maestro," he enjoyed a career that stretched across five decades.

Irène Joliot-Curie
Born September 12, 1897
French physicist and chemist who shared the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for creating new radioactive elements.
Irène Joliot-Curie was a French scientist born in Paris, the daughter of Pierre and Marie Curie. During World War I she worked as a nurse radiographer, and she later earned her doctorate with a study of the alpha rays given off by polonium. In 1926 she married Frédéric Joliot, and together they studied natural and artificial radioactivity and the transmutation of elements. The couple shared the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for producing new radioactive elements. She became a professor at the Faculty of Science in Paris, briefly served as France's Undersecretary of State for Scientific Research in 1936, directed the Radium Institute from 1946, and helped build France's first atomic pile as a commissioner for atomic energy.
