Igor Stravinsky
Born June 17, 1882
Russian-born composer whose ballets The Firebird, Petrushka, and The Rite of Spring transformed twentieth-century classical music.
Igor Stravinsky was a composer born in Oranienbaum, near St. Petersburg, Russia. He learned orchestration from Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, who became his mentor. Impresario Sergei Diaghilev hired him to write for the Ballets Russes, and the 1910 Paris premiere of The Firebird made him famous almost overnight. Petrushka followed in 1911, and The Rite of Spring caused an uproar when it premiered in 1913. After spending World War I in Switzerland, he could not return home because of the Russian Revolution. He later settled in Hollywood, became a U.S. citizen in 1945, and wrote works such as Oedipus Rex, Symphony in C, and The Rake's Progress.

She has won Wimbledon singles titles in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, and 2008, plus U.S. Open titles in 2000 and 2001, and she reached world No. 1 in 2002. Born June 17, 1898
Dutch graphic artist famous for mind-bending prints of impossible buildings, endless staircases, and interlocking tessellated patterns.
Maurits Cornelis Escher was a Dutch printmaker born in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. He studied graphic arts and woodcut methods in Haarlem, then traveled widely in Europe. Visits to the Alhambra in Granada and the great mosque of Cordoba in Spain inspired his fascination with repeating, interlocking shapes known as tessellations. Working in woodcut, lithography, and engraving, he created prints that mix careful realism with clever optical tricks. Among his best-known images are Drawing Hands, Relativity, and Ascending and Descending, which show staircases and spaces that could never exist in real life. His work drew strong interest from mathematicians and scientists, and it remains widely reproduced and exhibited around the world.
