Blaise Pascal
Born June 19, 1623
French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher who built an early calculator and helped found probability theory.
Blaise Pascal was a French mathematician, physicist, and religious thinker born in Clermont-Ferrand. As a young man he built a mechanical calculating machine, later called the Pascaline, to help with his father's numerical work. Working with Pierre de Fermat, he laid the groundwork for probability theory, starting from questions about the odds in games of chance. He also studied the arithmetical triangle now known as Pascal's triangle. In physics, his experiments with fluids and air pressure led to Pascal's principle, and he is credited with inventing the syringe and the hydraulic press. His writings include The Provincial Letters and Pensées, a collection of reflections on faith and human nature.
