George Westinghouse
Born October 6, 1846
American inventor and industrialist who created the railroad air brake and championed alternating-current electricity.
George Westinghouse was an American inventor and businessman from Central Bridge, New York. His first major success was a compressed-air brake for trains, patented in 1869, which made rail travel much safer. In 1886 he founded the Westinghouse Electric Company, which grew within a decade into a huge enterprise with tens of thousands of workers. Westinghouse believed alternating current (AC) was the best way to send electricity over long distances. He bought Nikola Tesla's AC patents in 1888 and hired Tesla himself. His company lit the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago with AC power and later built generators to turn the energy of Niagara Falls into electricity. Over his career he held more than 300 patents.

Carole Lombard
Born October 6, 1908
American film star of the 1930s, celebrated for screwball comedies such as Twentieth Century and My Man Godfrey.
Carole Lombard was an American actress born Jane Alice Peters in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Her family moved to California when she was a child, and she made her first film appearance at age 13, going on to act in many silent pictures during the 1920s. She signed with Paramount in 1930, but her real breakthrough came with the comedy Twentieth Century (1934), which helped define the screwball comedy style. She followed it with My Man Godfrey (1936), which brought her an Academy Award nomination, and Nothing Sacred (1937). Known for her quick timing and natural, modern manner, she became one of Hollywood's highest-paid stars. She married fellow actor Clark Gable in 1939, and her last film was To Be or Not to Be (1942).
