Willa Cather
Born December 7, 1873
American novelist known for O Pioneers! and My Ántonia, vivid stories of settlers on the Great Plains.
Willa Cather was an American writer whose novels brought the people and landscapes of the Nebraska prairie to life. Born in Virginia, she moved with her family to Nebraska as a child, and the immigrants and open land she knew there became central to her work. Before turning fully to fiction, she worked as a teacher, newspaper writer, and editor, including a post at McClure's magazine in New York starting in 1906. Her prairie novels O Pioneers! (1913), The Song of the Lark, and My Ántonia (1918) remain widely read. She won the Pulitzer Prize for One of Ours (1922) and also wrote Death Comes for the Archbishop (1927). She is honored in the National Women's Hall of Fame.

Gian Lorenzo Bernini
Born December 7, 1598
Italian sculptor and architect who shaped Baroque Rome with works like Apollo and Daphne and St. Peter's colonnade.
Gian Lorenzo Bernini was an Italian sculptor and architect who played a leading role in creating the Baroque style. Born in Naples, he trained in the workshop of his father, the sculptor Pietro Bernini. As a young artist he made dramatic marble works for Cardinal Scipione Borghese, including David and Apollo and Daphne. He went on to serve three popes, Urban VIII, Innocent X, and Alexander VII. In Rome he designed the bronze baldachin over the high altar of St. Peter's Basilica, the great colonnade in front of the church, and the Fountain of the Four Rivers in Piazza Navona. His Ecstasy of Saint Teresa in the Cornaro Chapel is among his most celebrated sculptures.
