Famous people born on December 9
Grace Hopper
Born December 9, 1906
American computer scientist and Navy rear admiral who pioneered compilers and helped create the COBOL programming language.
Grace Hopper was a mathematician from New York City who helped shape the early days of computing. After earning a PhD in mathematics at Yale and teaching at Vassar, she joined the Naval Reserve in 1943 and was sent to Harvard to program the Mark I, one of the first computers. She later worked on UNIVAC I, an early commercial computer, and advanced the idea of compilers, which translate human-friendly instructions into machine code. Her work led to COBOL, a business language released in 1960 that let people write programs in English-like words. Hopper rose to the rank of rear admiral and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

John Milton
Born December 9, 1608
English poet and writer best known for Paradise Lost, his epic poem about the fall of humankind.
John Milton was an English poet and thinker born into a middle-class London family. He studied at St. Paul's School and Christ's College, Cambridge, and wrote poetry in Latin, Italian, and English. His early works include the elegy Lycidas, and in 1644 he published Areopagitica, a famous argument against censorship and for freedom of the press. During the English Civil War he supported Oliver Cromwell and wrote official statements for the Commonwealth government as its secretary for foreign languages. Milton later completed his greatest work, the epic Paradise Lost, published in 1667, followed by Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes in 1671. He is honored in Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey.
