Emily Dickinson
Born December 10, 1830
American poet from Amherst, Massachusetts, whose compressed, inventive verse helped shape modern poetry.
Emily Dickinson was an American poet who spent nearly all her life in Amherst, Massachusetts. She studied at Amherst Academy and spent a year at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning home, where she lived at the family homestead with her sister Lavinia. Dickinson wrote prolifically and often tucked poems into letters to friends, but very little of her work appeared in print while she was alive. Her family later found about 1,800 poems gathered in forty hand-sewn booklets. The first collection came out in 1890. Known for short, intense lines, unusual syntax, and her signature dashes, she strongly influenced 20th-century poetry.

Ada Lovelace
Born December 10, 1815
English mathematician often called the first computer programmer for her notes on Charles Babbage's Analytical Engine.
Ada Lovelace was an English mathematician and the daughter of poet Lord Byron and Annabella Milbanke. Her mother made sure she received serious training in mathematics and science, rare for girls of her class, with tutors including the scientist Mary Somerville. As a teenager she met inventor Charles Babbage, who became her mentor. In 1843 she translated an article by Italian engineer Luigi Menabrea about Babbage's Analytical Engine and added her own notes, three times longer than the original. They described how the machine could compute Bernoulli numbers and handle symbols as well as numbers, earning her fame as the first computer programmer. The Ada programming language is named for her.
