Charles Dickens
Born February 7, 1812
English novelist who created Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, and Great Expectations.
Charles Dickens was an English writer born in Portsmouth. When he was 12 and his family fell into debt, he had to leave school and work in a factory, an experience that later shaped his stories about poor and working people. He became a reporter and wrote humorous sketches under the pen name "Boz." The Pickwick Papers launched his career as a novelist. Many of his books first came out in affordable monthly installments, including Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Bleak House, A Tale of Two Cities, and Great Expectations. He also edited the weekly magazines Household Words and All the Year Round. His vivid characters and detailed picture of London made him a leading author of the Victorian era.

Laura Ingalls Wilder
Born February 7, 1867
American author of the Little House books, based on her pioneer childhood on the frontier.
Laura Ingalls Wilder was an American writer born near Pepin, Wisconsin. As a child she moved with her family through Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, and Dakota Territory, and at 15 she earned a license to teach school. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885, and in 1894 the couple settled on Rocky Ridge Farm in Mansfield, Missouri. With editing help from her daughter, writer Rose Wilder Lane, she published her first book, Little House in the Big Woods, in 1932. It was followed by Farmer Boy, Little House on the Prairie, The Long Winter, and other titles drawn from her own pioneer life. The series later inspired the popular television show Little House on the Prairie, which ran from 1974 to 1982.
