Lady Bird Johnson
Born December 22, 1912
First Lady of the United States who championed highway beautification, conservation, and the Head Start program.
Lady Bird Johnson, born Claudia Alta Taylor in Karnack, Texas, was the wife of President Lyndon B. Johnson and served as First Lady during his presidency. She earned degrees in history and journalism from the University of Texas. As First Lady she took an unusually active role in policy, with her own staff and press secretary. Her signature cause was beautifying America's landscape, and she pushed for the Highway Beautification Act of 1965, which limited billboards and junkyards along highways. She also backed the Head Start preschool program as its honorary chair. In 1982 she founded the National Wildflower Research Center near Austin, now named after her. She received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.

Born December 22, 1858
Italian opera composer of La Boheme, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot.
Giacomo Puccini was an Italian composer born in Lucca, Tuscany. For about two hundred years his family had supplied the music directors of the city's Cathedral of San Martino, and he carried on that musical tradition. In 1880 he began studying at the Milan Conservatory, where his teachers included Amilcare Ponchielli. His opera Manon Lescaut brought his first big success and showed his habit of building drama around a central female character. He followed it with his best-known works: La Boheme (1896), Tosca (1900), and Madama Butterfly (1904). The Girl of the Golden West premiered at New York's Metropolitan Opera in 1910. He left his final opera, Turandot, unfinished. He is seen as a leading master of realistic Italian opera.
