Born December 21, 1940
American composer, guitarist, and satirist who led the Mothers of Invention and mixed rock with jazz and classical music.
Frank Zappa was an American composer, guitarist, and satirist born in Baltimore, Maryland. He rose to fame in the 1960s as leader of the Mothers of Invention, whose first album, Freak Out!, came out in 1966. Zappa refused to stay in one style. His records blended rock, doo-wop, R&B, jazz fusion, electronic experiments, and serious modern classical writing, often with sharp humor aimed at popular culture. Well-known albums include Hot Rats, Apostrophe (1974), and Joe's Garage (1980). He was also a respected guitarist, and his orchestral music reached a wider audience through an album conducted by Pierre Boulez. Britannica describes him as a rare polymath of the rock era, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
