Madam C. J. Walker
Born December 23, 1867
American entrepreneur who built a national hair care company for Black women and became a pioneering self-made millionaire.
Madam C. J. Walker was an American businesswoman and philanthropist. Born Sarah Breedlove on a Louisiana plantation to formerly enslaved parents, she started her business in 1905 with just $1.25, selling a scalp and hair product she called Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower. She later moved her company's headquarters to Indianapolis, where she built a factory. Walker trained a nationwide network of licensed sales agents in her "Walker System," opening paying careers to thousands of African American women. Her success made her one of the first Black women in America to become a millionaire. She gave generously to the YMCA, Tuskegee Institute students, and the NAACP, and her home Villa Lewaro in New York is now a national historic landmark.

Joseph Smith
Born December 23, 1805
American religious leader who published the Book of Mormon and founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Joseph Smith was an American religious leader born in Sharon, Vermont. He said that as a teenager he began receiving visions, and that in 1827 an angel led him to a set of golden plates. He published his translation of them as the Book of Mormon in 1830. That same year, on April 6 in Fayette, New York, he formally organized a church with his first followers, describing it as a restoration of original Christianity. It became the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Smith led his growing community to Kirtland, Ohio, then to Missouri, and finally to Nauvoo, Illinois, where he served as mayor. In 1844 he announced a run for president of the United States.

Eddie Vedder
Born December 23, 1964
American singer and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist of the Seattle rock band Pearl Jam.
Eddie Vedder is an American singer and songwriter from Evanston, Illinois, born Edward Louis Severson III. In 1990, while working as a security guard in San Diego, he wrote and recorded lyrics over an instrumental demo by guitarist Stone Gossard, which led to him joining the band that became Pearl Jam. The group's 1991 debut album, Ten, with songs such as "Alive," "Even Flow," and "Jeremy," became a defining record of the grunge era. Pearl Jam went on to release many hit albums and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. Vedder has also recorded on his own, including the Into the Wild soundtrack and the Grammy-nominated Ukulele Songs.
