Joseph Conrad
Born December 3, 1857
Novelist of Polish descent who wrote Heart of Darkness, Lord Jim, and Nostromo in English after years at sea.
Joseph Conrad was a novelist of Polish descent who became one of the most admired writers in the English language. As a young man he joined the French merchant marine as an apprentice and later spent about sixteen years in the British merchant navy. In 1886 he earned a master mariner's certificate and became a British citizen. He settled in England in 1894 to focus on writing and published his first novel, Almayer's Folly, in 1895. His best-known works include Lord Jim (1900), the novella Heart of Darkness (1902), Nostromo (1904), and The Secret Agent (1907). Readers value his rich prose, and his stories often explore isolation and difficult moral choices rather than simple adventure.

Ozzy Osbourne
Born December 3, 1948
English singer who fronted heavy metal band Black Sabbath, then found solo success and starred in TV's The Osbournes.
Ozzy Osbourne, born John Michael Osbourne in Birmingham, England, was the lead singer of the 1970s heavy metal band Black Sabbath. The group took that name in 1969 and released its self-titled debut and the album Paranoid in 1970, which included songs such as "War Pigs" and "Iron Man." After his departure from the band in 1979, he built a successful solo career in the 1980s with albums like Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman and the well-known song "Crazy Train." Nicknamed the "Prince of Darkness," he reached a new audience with the MTV reality series The Osbournes (2002-05), which showed his family's home life. He also gave his name to Ozzfest, an annual heavy metal festival.
