Mark Twain
Born November 30, 1835
American humorist and novelist who wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Langhorne Clemens, an American writer born in Florida, Missouri. He grew up in the river town of Hannibal, Missouri, where he worked as a printer's apprentice as a boy. In 1859 he earned a license as a steamboat pilot on the Mississippi River. After moving west in 1861, he became a newspaper reporter in Virginia City, Nevada, and took the name Mark Twain, a riverboat term for water 12 feet deep. His story about a jumping frog of Calaveras County won national attention, and his travel book The Innocents Abroad (1869) became a best seller. He later lived in Hartford, Connecticut, and wrote classics such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Life on the Mississippi, and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
