Willard Libby
Born December 17, 1908
American chemist who developed radiocarbon dating and won the 1960 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Willard Libby was an American chemist who grew up in Colorado and California and earned his bachelor's and doctoral degrees at the University of California, Berkeley, where he later taught. During World War II he worked on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University. At the University of Chicago, he and his students developed carbon-14 dating in 1947, a method that measures natural radioactive carbon to find the age of ancient materials. It became a valuable tool for archaeologists and earth scientists and was used to date items such as the Dead Sea Scrolls. Libby received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1960. He also served on the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission and later taught at UCLA.
