Luciano Pavarotti was an Italian tenor from Modena. He made his professional opera debut in 1961 as Rodolfo in La Boheme, and in 1968 he first sang at New York's Metropolitan Opera, where he later became a regular. He was admired for a clear, pure tone that held up even on the highest notes, including the famous string of high Cs in La Fille du regiment. Beginning in 1990 at the World Cup in Rome, he performed with Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras as the Three Tenors, helping bring opera to a much larger popular audience. His outdoor concerts drew crowds of up to 500,000 people. He won five Grammy Awards and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2001.
