Born October 13, 1925
British Conservative politician who served as the United Kingdom's first female prime minister, from 1979 to 1990.
Margaret Thatcher was a British politician and the first woman to serve as prime minister of the United Kingdom. Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, she studied chemistry at Oxford and later trained as a barrister. She entered Parliament in 1959 as the Conservative member for Finchley and served as education secretary in the early 1970s. In 1975 she won the Conservative Party leadership, and after the 1979 election she led the government until 1990. Her policies, often called "Thatcherism," included selling state-owned industries, reforming trade unions, cutting taxes, and letting council tenants buy their homes. She also led Britain during the Falklands conflict and worked closely with U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Her firm style earned her the nickname "the Iron Lady."
