Ralph Lauren
Born October 14, 1939
American fashion designer who founded the Polo brand, known for its classic, preppy American style.
Ralph Lauren is an American fashion designer and businessman from the Bronx, New York, born Ralph Lifshitz. Before designing, he worked in retail, including a job at Brooks Brothers. In 1967 he began making wide neckties under the name Polo, and the line soon grew into complete menswear collections. He added clothing for women in 1971, and his short-sleeve shirt with a small polo player logo became a lasting favorite. His style draws on the look of upper-class English dress mixed with relaxed American East Coast sportswear. Over time the company expanded into home goods and fragrances, and it went public in 1997. Lauren has won the Coty Award and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2025.
