Mahatma Gandhi
Born October 2, 1869
Indian leader whose nonviolent resistance helped India win independence from Britain and inspired civil rights movements worldwide.
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India, and studied law in London. In 1893 he moved to South Africa, where facing racial discrimination turned him into an activist. There he developed satyagraha, a method of peaceful protest based on truth and firmness. After returning to India in 1915, he became the leading figure of the independence movement and guided the Indian National Congress. In 1930 he led the 240-mile Salt March to the sea to protest Britain's salt laws, drawing worldwide attention. In 1942 he launched the Quit India movement, and India became independent in 1947. People called him Mahatma, meaning "great soul," and his ideas inspired later leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr.

Groucho Marx
Born October 2, 1890
American comedian of the Marx Brothers, famous for his quick wit, cigar, glasses, and painted mustache, and host of You Bet Your Life.
Groucho Marx, born Julius Henry Marx in New York City, was the sharp-tongued star of the Marx Brothers comedy team. He and his brothers began in vaudeville, then became Broadway hits in the 1920s with shows such as The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers. Their films, including Duck Soup and A Night at the Opera, mixed wild physical gags with clever wordplay that poked fun at society. Groucho's trademarks were rapid-fire jokes, a cigar, glasses, and a greasepaint mustache. After the team broke up, he found new fame hosting the quiz show You Bet Your Life, which began on radio in 1947, moved to television in 1950, and earned him an Emmy. He received a special Academy Award in 1974.

Sting
Born October 2, 1951
English singer, songwriter, and bassist who led The Police and went on to a long, successful solo career.
Sting, born Gordon Sumner in northeast England, worked as a schoolteacher before turning to music full time. His nickname came from a black-and-yellow striped sweater he often wore. In 1977 he formed The Police with drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers, and the trio scored hits like "Roxanne," "Message in a Bottle," and "Every Breath You Take." After the band split, he launched a solo career with The Dream of the Blue Turtles in 1985, later releasing popular albums such as Ten Summoner's Tales and Brand New Day. He wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway show The Last Ship. Sting founded the Rainforest Foundation in 1987 and received Kennedy Center Honors in 2014.
