Born October 1, 1881
American aviation pioneer who founded the company that became Boeing, one of the world's best-known aircraft makers.
William Boeing was born in Detroit, Michigan. He left Yale University in 1903 and moved to the Pacific Northwest, where he built a business in the timber industry. He also took flying lessons from aviator Glenn L. Martin. In 1916 he started Pacific Aero Products Co. in Seattle, and a year later it was renamed the Boeing Airplane Company. The company built seaplanes and, during the 1920s, mainly made fighter aircraft for the U.S. Army. Boeing also moved into carrying mail and passengers, launching Boeing Air Transport in 1926 and later forming United Aircraft and Transport. He received the Daniel Guggenheim Medal in 1934 and retired from the aviation business that same year. He was enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 1966.
