Born April 30, 1777
German mathematician and scientist who reshaped number theory and made major contributions to astronomy, geodesy, and magnetism.
Carl Friedrich Gauss was a German mathematician from Brunswick whose talent for numbers showed up very early. As a young schoolboy he reportedly added the whole numbers from 1 to 100 almost instantly, and the Duke of Brunswick later paid for his education. In 1796 he showed how to draw a regular 17-sided figure using only a compass and straightedge. His 1801 book Disquisitiones Arithmeticae made him the modern founder of number theory. That same year he calculated where the lost asteroid Ceres would reappear, and astronomers found it close to his prediction. From 1807 he directed the observatory at Göttingen. With Wilhelm Weber he studied Earth's magnetism and built an early electric telegraph.
