Salvador Dalí
Born May 11, 1904
Spanish Surrealist painter known for dreamlike images such as The Persistence of Memory and his famous upturned mustache.
Salvador Dalí was a Spanish artist from the Catalan town of Figueres. In 1921 he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, where he befriended filmmaker Luis Buñuel and poet Federico García Lorca. After visiting Paris in 1927 he became part of the Surrealist movement, painting everyday objects transformed into strange, dreamlike forms with careful realistic detail. His best-known painting, The Persistence of Memory from 1931, shows melting clocks. He also worked on films, including Un Chien Andalou with Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock's Spellbound. He lived in the United States from 1940 to 1948, then settled in Port Lligat, Spain. He created the Dalí Theatre-Museum in his hometown.

Richard Feynman
Born May 11, 1918
American physicist who shared the 1965 Nobel Prize for work on quantum electrodynamics and invented Feynman diagrams.
Richard Feynman was an American physicist from Far Rockaway, Queens, New York. He earned a bachelor's degree at MIT and a Ph.D. at Princeton in 1942. During World War II he worked at Los Alamos under Hans Bethe on the atomic bomb project. He taught at Cornell and then joined Caltech in 1950, where he spent the rest of his career. In 1948 he introduced Feynman diagrams, simple drawings that made particle physics calculations much easier. In 1965 he shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with Sin-Itiro Tomonaga and Julian Schwinger for work on quantum electrodynamics. His teaching became the classic Feynman Lectures on Physics, and his memoir Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! became a bestseller.

Irving Berlin
Born May 11, 1888
Russian-born American songwriter whose standards include Alexander's Ragtime Band and God Bless America.
Irving Berlin, born Israel Baline in Russia, came to New York with his family in 1893. As a teenager he worked as a street singer and singing waiter. A misspelling of his name on 1907 sheet music gave him the name Irving Berlin. His 1911 hit Alexander's Ragtime Band made him a star of Tin Pan Alley. Even though he could not read music, he wrote more than 1,000 songs, along with 19 stage shows and 18 movie scores. His work includes the Broadway musicals Annie Get Your Gun and Call Me Madam, and the films Top Hat and Holiday Inn. His patriotic song God Bless America, from 1938, became an unofficial national anthem. He also built Broadway's Music Box Theatre.
