Katharine Hepburn
Born May 12, 1907
American stage and screen actress known for her independent spirit and films like The Philadelphia Story and On Golden Pond.
Katharine Hepburn was an American actress from Hartford, Connecticut, who earned a history degree from Bryn Mawr College before turning to acting. She became a Hollywood star in the 1930s with films such as Morning Glory, Little Women, and Bringing Up Baby. With her crisp New England voice and strong-willed screen persona, she offered a new kind of leading lady who did not fit the usual mold. Her later classics included The Philadelphia Story, Woman of the Year, The African Queen, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, and On Golden Pond. She won four Academy Awards for Best Actress out of 12 nominations, and in 1999 the American Film Institute ranked her as the top American screen legend.

Florence Nightingale
Born May 12, 1820
British nurse and reformer, known as the Lady with the Lamp, who helped turn nursing into a respected profession.
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, to wealthy English parents. Against her family's wishes, she chose nursing, a job that had little respect at the time, and trained in Germany and Paris. In 1854 she led a team of 38 nurses to care for British soldiers during the Crimean War. Her nighttime rounds among the wounded made her famous as the Lady with the Lamp. Back in Britain, she used statistics and clear charts to push for health reforms, and in 1858 she became the first woman member of the Royal Statistical Society. She published Notes on Nursing in 1859 and opened a nursing school at St. Thomas' Hospital in London in 1860. International Nurses Day is held on her birthday.

Yogi Berra
Born May 12, 1925
Hall of Fame New York Yankees catcher who won 10 World Series titles and became famous for his witty sayings.
Yogi Berra, born Lawrence Peter Berra in St. Louis, Missouri, was the son of Italian immigrants. A friend gave him his famous nickname. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, including the D-Day invasion, he joined the New York Yankees in 1946 and played catcher for the team through 1963. He appeared in 14 World Series and was on 10 championship teams, and he was named American League Most Valuable Player in 1951, 1954, and 1955. He later managed both the Yankees and the New York Mets. Berra entered the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972, and his playful remarks, such as "It ain't over till it's over," became part of American speech.
