Leonardo da Vinci
Born April 15, 1452
Italian Renaissance painter, draftsman, and inventor who created the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.
Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian artist and thinker from the area around Vinci, near Florence. As a teenager he trained in the Florence workshop of Andrea del Verrocchio, where he studied painting, sculpture, and practical crafts. He later worked for powerful patrons, including Ludovico Sforza, the Duke of Milan, for whom he painted The Last Supper in the 1490s. His portrait known as the Mona Lisa became his most famous painting, and his drawing Vitruvian Man explored the proportions of the human body. Leonardo also studied anatomy, flight, water, and plants, filling thousands of notebook pages with sketches and ideas for machines. He spent his last years in France as a guest of King Francis I.

Born April 15, 1843
American-born novelist who explored Americans abroad in works such as Daisy Miller and The Portrait of a Lady.
Henry James was a novelist and short-story writer born in New York City. His older brother was the philosopher William James. After spending a year at Harvard Law School, he turned to writing and in 1876 made his home in England, where he lived for the rest of his career. Many of his stories show the clash between open, eager Americans and the older, more complicated society of Europe. His best-known books include Daisy Miller (1878), The Portrait of a Lady (1881), The Turn of the Screw, The Ambassadors (1903), and The Golden Bowl (1904). Known for deep psychological detail, he became a British citizen in 1915 and strongly shaped the modern novel.
