American composer, lyricist, and performer who created the Broadway musicals In the Heights and Hamilton.
Lin-Manuel Miranda is an American composer, lyricist, and actor born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents. He studied theater at Wesleyan University. His musical In the Heights opened on Broadway in 2008, with Miranda writing the songs and playing the lead; it won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. He then wrote Hamilton, a story of founding father Alexander Hamilton told with hip-hop-inspired music and a diverse cast. The show won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and 11 Tony Awards. Miranda also wrote the Oscar-nominated song "How Far I'll Go" for Disney's Moana, starred in Mary Poppins Returns, and received a MacArthur Foundation award in 2015.

Ethel Merman, born Ethel Agnes Zimmermann in Astoria, Queens, was one of Broadway's best-known musical stars. After high school she worked as a stenographer while singing in nightclubs. Her Broadway debut came in 1930 in the Gershwins' Girl Crazy. Over the next three decades she created thirteen stage roles, including leads in Anything Goes, Annie Get Your Gun, Call Me Madam, and Gypsy. Audiences loved her bold mezzo-soprano, exact pitch, and clear diction, heard in songs such as "There's No Business Like Show Business," "I Get a Kick Out of You," and "You're the Top." She won a Tony Award for Call Me Madam, later received a special Tony for her career, and appeared in about twenty films.

Albert Pujols

Dominican-born MLB slugger who won two World Series with the St. Louis Cardinals and hit over 700 career home runs.
Albert Pujols is a Dominican-born baseball player from Santo Domingo who moved with his family to Independence, Missouri, at age 16. Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 13th round in 1999, he debuted in 2001 and was named Rookie of the Year. With St. Louis he won three National League MVP awards and two World Series titles, in 2006 and 2011. He later played for the Los Angeles Angels and the Los Angeles Dodgers, then returned to the Cardinals for his final season in 2022. That year he became just the fourth player in major league history to reach 700 home runs, finishing with 703 homers and more than 3,000 hits.
