Louis Pasteur
Born December 27, 1822
French chemist and microbiologist who showed that germs cause disease and gave his name to pasteurization.
Louis Pasteur was a French scientist from Dole whose discoveries changed biology and medicine. Early in his career he studied crystals of tartaric acid and uncovered how some molecules exist in mirror-image forms. He then showed that tiny living organisms are responsible for fermentation and for spoiling wine and beer. To stop that spoilage, he developed pasteurization, a heat treatment still used to make drinks safe. His experiments helped prove the germ theory of disease, and he applied it to problems such as illnesses in silkworms. Pasteur went on to create vaccines against anthrax and rabies, and in 1888 he founded the Pasteur Institute in Paris, which he led as director.

Marlene Dietrich
Born December 27, 1901
German-born American actress and singer who became a Hollywood icon after starring in The Blue Angel.
Marlene Dietrich was a Berlin-born actress and singer who became one of the most glamorous stars of classic Hollywood. She trained on the violin before turning to the cabaret stages of Weimar Germany. Director Josef von Sternberg cast her in The Blue Angel (1930), an early German sound film, and then brought her to Paramount, where she starred in Morocco, which earned her an Academy Award nomination, and Shanghai Express. After becoming an American citizen, she turned down offers to work in Nazi Germany and gave hundreds of performances for Allied troops during World War II. Later she appeared in Witness for the Prosecution and built a long international career as a cabaret singer, while her trouser-wearing style influenced fashion.
