Abraham Lincoln was the American president who guided the nation through the Civil War. He won election to the Illinois legislature in 1834, became a lawyer in 1837, and practiced law in Springfield. He also challenged Stephen Douglas in a famous series of debates over slavery. Elected president in 1860 and reelected in 1864, he led the country during the Civil War. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, and gave the Gettysburg Address that November. The 13th Amendment, ratified in 1865, ended slavery nationwide.

Charles Darwin
Born February 12, 1809
English naturalist who explained evolution by natural selection in his 1859 book On the Origin of Species.
Charles Darwin was an English naturalist born in Shrewsbury, the son of a doctor. He studied medicine at Edinburgh University before moving to Christ's College, Cambridge. In late 1831 he set out on HMS Beagle for a nearly five-year voyage around the world, collecting specimens and making observations, including on the Galapagos Islands. Back in England, he spent years developing his ideas about how species change over time. In 1858 his work was presented together with that of Alfred Russel Wallace, and in November 1859 he published On the Origin of Species, which explained evolution through natural selection. The first printing sold out right away. He was elected to the Royal Society in 1839.
