Chuck Yeager
Born February 13, 1923
American Air Force test pilot who became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound.
Chuck Yeager grew up in Myra, West Virginia, and joined the military in 1941. During World War II he flew fighter missions over Europe with the Eighth Air Force and became an ace. On October 14, 1947, he flew the rocket-powered Bell X-1, which he named Glamorous Glennis after his wife, faster than the speed of sound, a feat kept secret until 1948. In 1953 he set a new speed record of about 1,650 miles per hour in the X-1A. He later led the Air Force's school for research pilots, commanded fighter units, and retired as a brigadier general in 1975. Tom Wolfe's book The Right Stuff made him widely famous, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1985.

Grant Wood
Born February 13, 1891
American painter of the Midwest best known for the iconic 1930 painting American Gothic.
Grant Wood was born on a farm near Anamosa, Iowa, and grew up in Cedar Rapids after his family moved there. He trained as a craftsman and painter and studied in Paris in the 1920s. A trip to Germany exposed him to finely detailed paintings by old German and Flemish masters, and he gave up his earlier Impressionist style for sharp, realistic scenes of rural America. In 1930 he showed American Gothic, a picture of a stern farmer and a woman standing before a white farmhouse, at the Art Institute of Chicago, and it became one of the most familiar images in American art. Wood was a leading voice of the Regionalist movement and taught art at the University of Iowa from 1934.

Peter Gabriel
Born February 13, 1950
English singer-songwriter, original frontman of Genesis, and solo star known for the album So and "Sledgehammer."
Peter Gabriel was born in Woking, England. While at Charterhouse School he helped form the band Genesis, and as its lead singer he became known for theatrical stage shows with elaborate costumes. He left the group in 1975 to start a solo career, releasing four albums under his own name. His 1986 album So was a major hit, and in 1993 Rolling Stone magazine picked his playful "Sledgehammer" music video as the best video of all time. Gabriel is also known for championing music from around the world: he co-founded the WOMAD festival in 1982 and the Real World Records label in 1989. He won a Grammy for a song from WALL-E and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both with Genesis and as a solo artist.
