Charlotte Brontë
Born April 21, 1816
English novelist best known for Jane Eyre, the eldest of the three famous Brontë writing sisters.
Charlotte Brontë was born in Thornton, Yorkshire, England, and grew up in a clergyman's family. Her younger sisters Emily and Anne also became writers. She received most of her education at home and later worked as a teacher and governess. In 1846 the three sisters published a joint book of poems under the pen names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell, with Charlotte writing as Currer Bell. Her novel Jane Eyre appeared in 1847 and was an immediate success, admired for telling its story through the eyes of a young woman. She went on to publish Shirley and Villette, and her first novel, The Professor, was released in 1857. Jane Eyre is still widely read as a classic of Western literature.

Born April 21, 1838
Scottish-born American naturalist and writer who founded the Sierra Club and championed America's national parks.
John Muir was born in Dunbar, Scotland, and moved with his family to Wisconsin in 1849. He studied at the University of Wisconsin and showed a talent for building clever inventions, such as clocks. He then chose to devote himself to studying nature. He walked from Indiana to the Gulf of Mexico and reached California in 1868, the year he first saw Yosemite Valley. His articles and books, including The Mountains of California and My First Summer in the Sierra, celebrated the wild beauty of the West. In 1892 he helped found the Sierra Club and became its first president. Muir played a key role in creating Yosemite and Sequoia national parks, and a 1903 camping trip with Theodore Roosevelt helped shape the president's conservation policies.
